CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

It was an hour later, and Logan stood on Tony MacLean’s front step, waiting for the bastard to answer the door. He’d called Tyler and told the DC to meet him at the address, since he’d already met the man, and would be able to identify him.

Assuming, of course, he ever opened the door.

“Must be sleeping. Curtains are all shut,” Logan said, stepping back onto the path and casting his gaze across the front of the house. Moss had taken hold wherever it could, so the building looked like it had some sort of fungal infection.

“Nah, boss,” Tyler said, stifling a yawn. “It was like this yesterday, too. I think they’re just lazy bastards.”

Logan glanced around at the overgrown garden, and the mounds of discarded junk that filled its corners. “Aye, you can say that again.”

Tyler’s yawn got the better of him. The attempt to suppress it only made it longer and more powerful, and Logan looked him up and down while he waited for it to be over.

“What’s wrong with you?” he asked. “Late night?”

“Early morning, boss,” Tyler said. “Sinead’s been getting up about half five every morning lately.”

Logan appeared equal parts horrified and bewildered. “What, on purpose?”

“Aye. No.” Tyler scratched the back of his head and yawned again—a smaller one, this time. “I don’t know. She says she just needs the toilet, then doesn’t see the point in going back to sleep. Woke me up this morning. And, you know, someone had us burning the midnight oil last night…”

A thought struck him. A terrible, awful thought.

“You, eh, you heard from DI Forde this morning, boss?” he asked. “Any word on how his hot date went?”

“No. Dread to think.”

Tyler shuddered, and tried very hard to shut down the mental images that started to swirl together in his mind.

“Aye,” he muttered. “Aye, same here.”

Logan approached the house’s double front doors, hammered a fist on one of them, then bellowed, “Mr MacLean, I know you’re in there.”

Tyler watched the door and listened for a few moments, breath held. Then, he shot a sideways look at the DCI. “Do you?”

“Do I fuck,” Logan admitted. “He could be anywhere.”

“He might well be in bed,” Tyler said, backtracking on his earlier remark. “Didn’t strike me as an early riser.”

“It’s half-nine,” Logan said.

Tyler shrugged. “I put him down at maybe an eleven-fifteen sort of guy. You still haven’t actually told me why we’re bringing him in, boss. Has something come up?”

Logan studied the doors, like he was considering shouldering them off their hinges, but clearly decided against it.

“Aye, you could say that, son. You know he leathered shite out of the lad he thought was after his daughter?”

“Yeah, boss. He’s been charged for that one already, though,” Tyler said.

“True. But what he hasn’t been charged for is Steven Sangster.”

Tyler looked from Logan to the door and back again, his frown deepening.

“Who?”

“Another lad in Eva’s school. Sixth year boy. Been trying his luck with Eva, apparently,” Logan explained. “So, one night, Eva’s old man grabs
